The Dalsland Nordmarken lake system is located in the borderland between Dalsland, southern Värmland and Norway. The forests are wild and beautiful, the water often drinkable and people few and far between. The lake system has long been one of the most popular canoe areas in Europe. You can glide across 100-meter deep lakes, paddle down The Dalsand Canal and take the locks out into the inland sea Lake Vänern. Adventure-lovers might even consider making their way over to Norway and continuing along the Halden Canal. With over a hundred campsites, the area can accommodate many canoeists even in July, the peak season. Other canoeists prefer to stay completely isolated in the wilderness, where all you see is forest, water and wildlife in harmony.
The Dalsland Nordmarken lake system contains many areas of high natural value. As such, many places and areas are protected and access is prohibited. The non-profit association DANO has made all this a bit more accessible by offering prepared campsites along the waterways in the area. The association, which is jointly run by landowners, canoe rental businesses and local communities, aims to preserve and protect the unique natural beauty and ecosystems throughout the area.
